Welcome to Year 1 - Julia Donaldson Class
Our class teacher is Ms Dreifuss and our teaching assistant is Mrs Anyiam.
Key information for Year 1:
Our P.E days are Monday and Thursday.
Children will need their P.E kits on these days. P.E kits should remain in school all week.
Homework will be given out on a Friday night and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Children should try to read at home every night and always practice their spellings.
Parents: Please try to read at home with your child every night, even just for 5-10 minutes and then sign their home reading record. It really does make a massive difference to their progression in reading and all other subjects.
All children now have a personal login for 'Mymaths' to use for their online homework, located at the front of the yellow homework book. The children love having a go at Maths games online so please, if possible, encourage them and help them as much as you can. Here are some other fun, free and educational websites for you and your child to enjoy at home:
We have been very busy in class, settling into our new classroom, routines and lessons. This term our topic is 'Ourselves' and we are discovering what makes each of us so special.
In Mathematics we are working on our basic number skills. We are learning all about numbers within twenty- counting forwards and backwards, one more and one less and composition of numbers within ten. We are developing our confidence and skills in problem-solving and reasoning. We are also looking at 2D and 3D shapes.
In English we are working hard to improve our reading and writing super sentences! We will be learning about the differences between fiction and non-fiction books and will be reading books from a local author 'Jude Lennon'. We are also doing lots of work on recounts and we will be using our trip to the Museum of Liverpool as a real-life event for us to write about..
In Science we have moved onto learning all about the Changing Seasons. We are getting very good at our four seasons and are discussing what the weather is like during each of the seasons and what clothes we will need to wear. We have been watching weather forecasts for our region and are going to become weather forecasters ourselves. using Green Screen technology!
In Topic we are finding out what it is like where we live and what life used to be like in Liverpool when our grandparents were little. We will be going on a school trip to the Museum of Liverpool to find out all about our home town now and how it used to be! Look out for some pictures!
In Art we have been learning what a self-portrait is. We looked at some famous artists and their work. We created our portraits, using mirrors to study our own faces. Our portraits are as fantastic as any work by Leonardo da Vinci or Picasso!
In DT we are going to be building a skyline of Liverpool! We are Master Builders in Year 1!
In P.E. we are developing our balancing skills.
We will also continue our Phonics and Guided Reading everyday. We have a busy term ahead, are you ready for the challenge?
This week we have been very lucky at Banks Road. We have been on a trip to the Museum of Liverpool and had visits from an award winning children's author Stuart Reid AND from The StoryBarn at Calderstones. The children really enjoyed these opportunities to bring literature and a love of reading to life! Have a look at our photographs and see the links below for more details:
