Prevent Strategy
Prevent Duty at Banks Road Primary School
At Banks Road Primary School, we are committed to safeguarding our pupils from all forms of harm, including the risk of radicalisation and extremism. This forms part of our statutory duty under the Prevent Duty, as outlined in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 and the updated Prevent Duty Guidance (2023).
What is the Prevent Duty?
The Prevent Duty requires schools to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.”
This includes:
- Tackling the ideological causes of terrorism
- Intervening early to support individuals susceptible to radicalisation
- Enabling those who have engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate
Our Approach at Banks Road
We take a whole-school approach to Prevent, which includes:
1. Leadership and Governance
- Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) oversees Prevent responsibilities.
- Governors receive regular safeguarding and Prevent training.
- Prevent is embedded in our Child Protection Policy, reviewed annually.
2. Staff Training
- All staff receive Prevent awareness training, including how to identify signs of radicalisation.
- DSL and Deputy DSLs undertake enhanced Prevent training, including ideology-specific modules.
3. Curriculum and Resilience
- Our RSHE and PSHE curriculum promotes critical thinking, respect, and tolerance.
- Pupils learn about British values, online safety, and how to challenge extremist views.
- We actively work to reduce permissive environments that may allow radicalising influences.
4. Risk Assessment
- We assess the local risk of radicalisation and tailor our approach accordingly.
- We follow Liverpool City Council’s guidance and use the Security Threat Check (STC) model where appropriate.
5. Referral and Support
- Concerns about radicalisation are referred to the DSL, who may escalate to Children’s Services or the Channel Programme.
- We follow the Liverpool Safeguarding Children Partnership (LSCP) procedures and escalation protocols.
Online Safety and Visiting Speakers
- We have robust filtering and monitoring systems in place.
- All visiting speakers are vetted to ensure they align with our safeguarding ethos.
