Sustainability
We are pleased to share that Banks Road is taking steps to become a more sustainable and environmentally responsible school.
As part of this work, we have developed a School Climate Action Plan and launched a Pupil Eco Committee after-school club, giving children a voice and an active role in caring for their environment.
Miss Kesedzic is the school’s Sustainability Lead, responsible for coordinating this work and supporting staff and pupils as we move forward.
🌍 Why are we doing this?
Climate change is a real and growing challenge, and schools are already experiencing its effects through hotter summers, heavier rainfall, and rising energy costs.
As a school, we want to take practical, sensible steps that help protect our environment, improve our school grounds, and prepare children for the world they are growing up in.
The Department for Education (DfE) has published national guidance encouraging all schools to have a sustainability lead and a climate action plan in place.
Our approach is proportionate and realistic, and focuses on positive actions that fit our school community.
🌍What does our Climate Action Plan include?
Our Climate Action Plan focuses on four key areas, as recommended by the Department for Education:
🌱 Green Careers and Curriculum
This looks at how sustainability is naturally embedded into learning and how pupils can begin to understand future skills and careers linked to science, technology, and environmental responsibility.
⚡ Decarbonisation
This focuses on reducing our carbon footprint by using energy more efficiently, reducing waste, and making thoughtful choices about how we run our school buildings.
☀️ Adaptation and Resilience
This is about preparing our school to cope with the effects of climate change, such as extreme heat or heavy rain, so that our site remains safe, comfortable, and fit for learning.
🌿 Environment and Biodiversity
This involves improving our school grounds for nature, including planting, outdoor learning, and creating spaces that support wildlife and pupils’ well-being.
🌍Working together
Our staff Eco Committee helps guide and review our actions, while our Pupil Eco Committee gives children the opportunity to share ideas, lead initiatives, and learn about caring for their environment.
We would love to work with parents and family members who have an interest in sustainability or climate action.
Whether you live sustainably at home, have great recycling knowledge, or work in a role connected to sustainability or one of our four key areas, please feel free to get in touch.
Working together will help us make a real difference.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together towards a more sustainable future for our school.
