What we are Learning this half term:

English – In English this half term, we will be immersing ourselves in the text On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin. The children will be writing a discovery narrative and an explanation text, focusing on clear organisation, precise vocabulary and explaining complex ideas clearly.

Maths – In Maths, we will be focusing on ratio, algebra and decimals. Children will be developing their understanding of ratio relationships, solving algebraic problems, and using decimals in a range of calculations and real-life contexts.

Science – Our science topic this half term is Electric Circuits. We will be investigating how electrical circuits work, identifying components of a circuit, exploring conductors and insulators, and understanding how changes in a circuit affect its function.

Geography – Over the next 6 weeks, we will be exploring Changing Birmingham, looking at how Birmingham has changed over time, the growth of the city, and how different industries have shaped Birmingham into the city it is today.

History – In history, we will be learning about Cities in Time: The Manchester Man. Children will explore how Manchester developed during the Industrial Revolution, considering themes such as migration, industry, social change and how cities evolve over time.

Religion – In RE, we will be learning about Stories Which Point to the Truth. Children will explore a range of fables and moral stories, including The Tortoise and the Hare, and discuss the messages, morals and lessons these stories teach.

Shared Reading – In our reading lessons, we will be exploring SATs-style comprehension questions using the text Skellig. Children will practise retrieving, inferring and explaining their answers using evidence from the text.

P.E. – PE will be on a Monday this half term, so please ensure that your child wears their Banks Road PE kit on this day. Our topic this half term is Dance, with a focus on Street Dance. Children will learn to perform a range of movements, develop rhythm and coordination, and work collaboratively towards performing in our Dance Showcase.

PSHE – Our next PSHE topic is Dreams and Goals. Children will think about their aspirations for the future, explore different pathways to achieve their goals and discuss what steps they can take now to support their ambitions.

Music – Every Tuesday, children in Year 6 will be practising their string instruments. They will continue to develop their ensemble skills and perform pieces together as part of an orchestra.

 

Homework:

Homework will be set on MyMaths, every Friday. The expectation is that homework should be submitted each Thursday.

Your child should also be practising the multiplication tables each day.

Your child has also been provided with a reading book, tailored to their level of reading. It is expected that all children should read several times a week which is to be recorded in their reading records.
