What we are Learning this half term:
English – In English this half term, we will be immersing ourselves in the text A Story Like the Wind. The children will be writing a flashback narrative and a newspaper report, focusing on empathy, tone, and effective use of language.
Maths – In Maths, we will be focusing on fractions: equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, adding and subtraction fractions, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, multiplying and dividing fractions and finding fractions of an amount.
Science – Our science topic this half term is The Science of Light. We will investigating: How does light travel?, How does reflection help us see?, Can we increase reflection?, What shapes our shadows?, What causes rainbows?, Can we make a red apple blue?
Geography – Over the next 6 weeks, we will be exploring Ethiopia, looking at what it is like to live in Ethiopia, challenges of Ethiopia, the biomes and agriculture in Ethiopia and how climate change is affecting Ethiopia.
History – In history we will be learning about Medieval African Kingdoms of Ethiopia & Benin, discovering how the empire rose, the trappings of power, a rainforest kingdom and rules, rituals and regalia.
Religion– In RE we will be learning about Living Sikh traditions, exploring the home of the Guru, the golden temple, several Sikh stories and the journey to becoming Khalsa.
Shared Reading – In our reading lessons, we will be exploring a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry themed around The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Survivors and The Final Year. Children will practise retrieving and interpreting information using evidence from the text.
P.E. – PE will be on a Monday this half term, so please ensure that your child wears their Banks Road PE kit on this day. Our topic this half term is Invasion - Competitive (Netball & Basketball). Children will learn to further develop knowledge of attacking and defending, to know how to intercept a pass, to know how to invade as a team, to communicate effectively with teammates and to develop sportsmanship.
PSHE – Our next PSHE topic is Celebrating Differences. We will be empathise with people who are different, knowing how it can feel to be excluded or treated badly by being different in some way and developing a range of strategies for managing my feelings in bullying situations and for problem-solving when I’m part of one.
Music – Every Tuesday, children in Year 6 will be practising their string instruments. They will also be performing their pieces as part of an orchestra.
DT – In DT, the children will be exploring Solid Structures, using the steps of design, creating and evaluation to make a frame structures.
Homework:
Homework will be set on MyMaths, every Friday. The expectation is that homework should be submitted each Thursday.
Your child should also be practising the multiplication tables each day.

Your child has also been provided with a reading book, tailored to their level of reading. It is expected that all children should read several times a week which is to be recorded in their reading records.
