Year 6P 2025 - 2026

Mrs Perry

Welcome to our class page.

What we are learning this half term:

English - In English this half term we will be studying 'The Ways of the Wolf'. Children will be writing a documentary-style narrative and a balanced argument, developing their ability to use precise vocabulary, organise ideas clearly and present viewpoints thoughfully while explaining complex ideas.

Maths - In Maths, we will be focusing on decimals, fractions and percentages as well as area, volume and statistics. Children will deepen their understanding of how these concepts link together, apply them to problem-solving and use them confidently in real-life situations.

Science - Our science topic over this half term is Evolution and Inheritance. Children will explore how living things have changed over time, how characteristics are passed on through generations and how adaptation helps species survive in different environments.

Geography - Over the coming weeks, we will be learning about Jamaica, exploring its diversity, the impact of Hurricane Beryl and how tourism affects the country. Children will develop their understanding of physical and human geography and consider how natural events influence people and places.

History - In history, our topic is the Era of the Second World War. Children will learn about the Phoney War, life during the war in the countryside, the Windrush generation, and how health, welfare and schoolds were affected during this time. They will learn about how the war brought about significant change.

Religion - In RE, we will be studying about Stories Which Point to the Truth. Children will explore a range of fables and moral stories, including The Tortoise and the Hare and discuss the messages, morals and lessons these stories teach.

Shared Reading - In our reading lessons, we will be exploring SATs-style comprehension questions using the text Holes. Children will practise retrieving, inferring and explaining their answers using evidence from the text.

P.E. - P.E. will be on a Friday afternoon this half term, so please ensure that your child wears the Banks Road P.E. kit on this day. Our topic this half term is Dance where the children will be learning a routine in the style of 'street dance'.

PSHE - Our next PSHE topic is Dreams and Goals. Children will think about their aspirations for the future, explore pathways to achieve their goals and discuss what steps they can now take to support their ambitions.

Music - Every Wednesday, children in Year 6 will be practising their string instruments. They will continue to develop their ensemble skills and perform pieces together as part of an orchestra.

Homework will now be set on Maths.co.uk at the end of each topic. The expectation is that all homework is completed within one week of being set.

Times Table Rock Stars should be used to support the development of rapid recall and fluency. We recommend that children practise for around five minutes per day. Secure times table knowledge helps children to access more challenging maths, including reasoning and problem-solving and supports confidence across all areas of the maths curriculum.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via class dojo.
