What are we learning this half term?

English – This half term in English, we’ll be exploring the text FArTHER by Grahame Baker-Smith. Through this book, the children will be developing their writing skills by creating a setting narrative and composing a letter.

Maths – This half term, we’ll be focusing on fractions. The children will be learning to identify equivalent fractions, convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, compare and order fractions (both less than and greater than 1), and develop their skills in adding and subtracting different types of fractions, including mixed numbers.

Science – Our science topic is Animals including Humans. We’ll be looking at the ‘Stages of the human life cycle’, ‘Preparing for adulthood’, ‘What is a period?’, ‘When new humans are made’, ‘Do other animals have the same life cycle?’ and ‘What is the last stage of the human lifecycle?’

History – In history, we’ll be studying Anglo-Saxon Britain, looking at who they were, how they lived, and the impact they had on Britain.

Geography – This half term’s geography topic is Oceans. We’ll be finding out about the world’s oceans, their importance, and the challenges they face.

RE – In religious education, we’ll be continuing our learning about Islam, focusing on how Muslim traditions are lived out in daily life.

PSHE – Please see the attached overview for a detailed breakdown of our personal, social, health and economic education this term.

DT – In design and technology, the children will be working on combining different fabric shapes, using hand-sewing techniques to create a collaborative class project.

PE – PE will take place every Friday this half term, and our focus will be on Invasion in a Team (Hockey & Football skills).

Music – Year 5 will continue their string instrument lessons on Mondays. Please ensure your child brings their instrument into school each week.
