Mini Police

At Banks Road Primary School, our staff and governors are committed to providing children with the very best education. This means offering high-quality learning opportunities across all subjects, but also nurturing the whole child by extending learning beyond the classroom and preparing our pupils for life in the wider community.

We are delighted to be part of the exciting Mini Police project, organised by Merseyside Police.

What is Mini Police?

Mini Police is a fun and innovative police engagement programme, delivered in schools with the support of Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) from the local neighbourhood police team.

The programme gives children in Years 5 and 6 (aged 9–11) the opportunity to experience policing in a positive way while developing their role as active members of the local community.

Aims of Mini Police at Banks Road

Through the Mini Police programme, we aim to:

  • Introduce policing as a positive influence in children’s lives

  • Build trust, confidence and positive relationships with the police

  • Nurture children’s sense of social and moral responsibility

  • Develop safety awareness through fun and engaging activities

  • Encourage children to contribute to their community in meaningful ways

  • Reduce the risk of children becoming offenders or victims

  • Work alongside partners to promote age-appropriate safety messages

How the Programme Works

The Mini Police programme is built around three core areas:

  • Police-led education – Children receive engaging lessons covering important safety topics identified with the school and police team, such as road safety, fire safety, water safety, knife crime and internet safety.

  • School-led community engagement – Pupils take part in community actions linked to local priorities, such as litter picking, raising awareness about safe parking outside school, and speed checks.

  • Reward – As a thank you for their contribution, Mini Police officers are offered unique experiences such as visits to police stations, specialist units (e.g. the Dog Section or Control Room), or even fire stations.

Merseyside Police describe the project as:

“Our Mini Police will support force priorities through participation in community engagement events. Those involved can look forward to developing a confident voice through enjoyable experiences. Children who become part of the programme will help to tackle local issues, as highlighted by their own communities. By assisting the police service, we hope they will also carry that ownership and pride back into the community they live in.”

Mini Police at Banks Road

Since joining the Mini Police programme, our pupils have embraced the chance to take part in a wide range of exciting opportunities that develop their confidence, teamwork and sense of responsibility. Whether supporting community safety campaigns, meeting specialist police teams or helping tackle local issues, our Banks Road Mini Police officers are making a real difference in both school and the wider community.
